New York: Scribner's Catskill Lodge

Being new to the New York area, I started following all sorts of Intragram accounts to learn about fun things to do, cool hotels to stay, hip restaurants to try and new places to explore in and around New York City. And since we love weekend getaways with our dog Fletcher, the account for Scribner’s Catskill Lodge caught my eye months ago as a potential place to visit. Little did I know how perfect it would be for us!

Upon arrival, we walked through a very tall set of doors and into an open lobby strewn with sunlight and scented with a musky candle. In addition to the warm welcome we received from the front desk staff, there was a fresh bowl of water and a homemade treat to greet Fletcher at the very dog-friendly lodge. But that was just the beginning of how comfortable Scribner’s made Fletcher feel. Waiting in our room was a whole care package just for him - stainless-steel water bowls, a bag of those delicious homemade treats, a toy, a bandana (green to indicate he likes to say hi to everyone!), a collar tag and poop bags. Between the gifts, endless pets, ability to go everywhere around the property (except the restaurant) and other friendly dogs, he was in canine heaven!

Scribner’s is designed for those who appreciate clean, modern, comfortable aesthetics. Rooms are appointed with white linens, a small patio, seating areas covered in bohemian-style pillows and much to my delight, non-toxic toiletry products from Scribner’s own collection and one of my favorite brands Ursa Major. Oh, and we had a welcome basket of red apples, pre-packaged smores and a guide to getting the most out of the area.

Beyond the lobby is a series of sitting areas of sofas and chairs perfect for sinking into as well as a central fireplace (perfect for warming the toes), pool table, long table with library lamps and noise-canceling headphones and corner nooks perfect for reading under a blanket. One can bring a book or pick one from the hundreds surrounding you on built-in bookshelves. Board games, children’s toys and plenty of decks of cards can also fill your time. Be it day or night, the lounge is the perfect spot to relax, catch up with fellow guests or companions, sip wine or hot tea/coffee (always available at a station just off the lobby) or nap under a fluffy blanket.

Venture outdoors to stroll the grounds or admire the surrounding mountains from the bright red wood-burning chiminea (where you can cook your smores in the evening) or the adorable outdoor sauna, both available year-round. There are also plenty of captain’s chairs to admire the sunset over Hunter Mountain. (There is a pool to cool off in during the summer.) Or enjoy brunch, lunch, dinner or just a cocktail at Prospect, the restaurant on location. We enjoyed dinner there and still crave the oat milk latte and buttermilk pancakes we had for breakfast.

If you are looking for a getaway from New York City, Scribner’s Catskills Lodge is the perfect destination. before you go, check out their web site for special weekends dedicated to dogs, taking art classes or yoga, and hiking excursions!
